Health and social care workers can often find they are required to support individuals with a chest drain in situ. Our course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the lower respiratory tract and the pleural membrane.
We will discuss indications for the insertion of a thoracic drain, the different types of drain that are available, potential complications and procedures for changing chest drain bottles. What is a Chest Drain?
Identify indications for the insertion of a thoracic drain

Understand the reasons for changing a chest drain bottle
Procedure for changing a chest drain bottle
Discuss the physiological process behind a ‘swinging’ and ‘bubbling’ chest drain
