Course Description:

Health and social care workers can often find they are required to support individuals with a chest drain in situ. Our course will provide you with the knowledge and understanding of the lower respiratory tract and the pleural membrane. 

We will discuss indications for the insertion of a thoracic drain, the different types of drain that are available, potential complications and procedures for changing chest drain bottles. What this course offers:

  • Introduction – Anatomy and physiology

    • Understand anatomy of the lower respiratory tract

    • Understand the functions of the pleural membrane

  • What is a Chest Drain?

    • Identify indications for the insertion of a thoracic drain

    • Discuss different types of chest drains used

    • Discuss complications associated with chest drain insertion

    • Understand the reasons for changing a chest drain bottle

    • Procedure for changing a chest drain bottle

    • Discuss the physiological process behind a ‘swinging’ and ‘bubbling’ chest drain

    • Complications associated with chest drains:

      • If tube falls out

      • Chest drain stop ‘swinging’

      • Excess ‘bubbling’

      • Lack of drainage

    • Observations required for individual with chest pain

    • Pain management

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
