Learning Aims and Outcomes


 

Course Title:  Acquired Brain Injury (ABI)  


Course length 2-3 hours


Maximum number to attend - 12


This course is aimed at all staff supporting individuals with a brain injury which occurred after birth.


The course begins with identifying the different parts of the brain and their functions before discussing what effect this would have on the individual if this part of the brain becomes damaged.

·         Identify the areas of the brain and describe their functions.

What is Acquired Brain Injury

 

·         What is Acquired Brain Injury?

·         Identify possible causes

·         Explain possible side effects of injuries to different parts of the brain.

·         List the categories into which the effects of ABIs fall.

·         Understand challenges with regard to cognitive and communication skills

·         Understand the physical impact an ABI can have

·         Understand emotional and psychological behaviours associated with ABI

Planning and Support

·         Identify the areas of a persons life that might change as a result of an ABI.

·         Understand the importance of effective planning when supporting a person with an ABI.

·         Understand what is meant by rehabilitation and what this involves.

·         Identify possible barriers to rehabilitation

·         Discuss ways to help people copy with everyday tasks

·         Identify the role of therapists

·         Care planning


 


At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
