Course Title: Tracheostomy Care
Course length – 3 hours

This course is aimed at all staff working within the Health and Social Care sector who are involved in the day to day care of individuals with a tracheostomy in situ.
The course has a theoretical aspect followed by a practical session which includes suctioning.

Anatomy and Physiology
|
· Identify and understand anatomy and physiology of the neck. |
Indications
|
· Describe the indications for a tracheostomy |
Complications
|
· List the possible complications of having a tracheostomy. |
Different types of tracheostomy
|
· Identify the different types of tracheostomy tube and how to clean the inner tube. |
Communication
|
· Explain how to overcome challenges with communication. |
Emergency Care |
· State the actions required in an emergency |
Suctioning
|
· Feel confident to carry out suctioning of a tracheostomy.
|
Humidification |
· Understand the need and practice of humidification. |
Care of tracheostomy site |
· Correctly clean and dress a tracheostomy site. |
Practical session |
· The delegates will observe a demonstration followed by individuals practicing on a manikin. |
At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
