Course Description:

Catheter care training is aimed at people working in health and care settings. The course provides staff members with the knowledge and understanding on performing safe changing and emptying of catheter bags. We cover everything from anatomy and infection control, to procedures and record keeping.

At Training2Care we keep a keen focus on infection control and look at the risks of infection when dealing with catheters. We also support staff to be mindful of privacy, dignity, and respect, through using person centred care when dealing with catheters which can be a sensitive subject for some.

Learning Outcomes and Assessment Criteria:

What this course offers:

  • Introduction – Anatomy and Physiology

    • Understand how the bladder works and what can go wrong.

  • Urinary Catheters:

    • Understand what a catheter is

    • Understand when catheters are used

    • Understand risks including infection

    • Understand UTIs

    • Understand the need for informed consent

    • Understand maintenance of catheters

  • Emptying a Catheter Bag

    • Understand infection management implications

    • Have an awareness of how to measure urine output and monitor for abnormalities

  • Urinalysis:

    • Understand why urinalysis is needed

    • Explain the different urine specimens

    • The importance of infection control

    • Obtain a urine sample correctly using aseptic non-touch technique

  • Catheter Removal:

    • Understand the procedure for safe catheter removal

    • Discuss associated problems and techniques should problems arise

  • Drainage Systems:

    • Explain the different drainage systems and the importance of good infection control

  • Practical Session:

    • Take a catheter specimen of urine (CSU) using aseptic non-touch technique 

    • Classroom competency assessment

At the end of the training session, there is a written assessment to evidence the learning of the attendees.
